Jalal-ud-din Khilji, a Khilji ruler in Afghanistan in the 13th century, intended to ascend the throne of Delhi. Jalaluddin's evil nephew Alauddin Khilji proposes marriage to Jalaluddin's daughter Mehrunnisa. Their marriage is planned, but Alauddin commits adultery with another woman on the night of the incident. Sharif Pasha, a senior courtier, witnessed the act and was promptly killed by Alauddin. Mehrunnisa learns about this during the wedding and is horrified. After the marriage, Alauddin is promoted to the rank of major general in Jalaluddin's army.
Princess Padmavati accidentally injures the Rajput ruler of Mewar, Maharawal Ratan Singh, while hunting in a forest in Singhal, which is now Sri Lanka. He tells her that he went to Sinhala to buy a rare pearl for his only wife, Nagmati, as she treats him. The two eventually become close and fall in love. Padmavati accepts Ratan Singh's request for her hand in marriage and they marry with her father's permission.
After Alauddin takes over the throne of Delhi, he is sent by Jalaluddin to stop the Mongol invasion. Alauddin succeeds in doing so, but he attacks Devagiri without permission. He snatches the princess from the palace and makes her his mistress. Itat Khan, Jalaluddin's nephew and wife, warns him about Alauddin's plans to ascend the throne. But he goes to the prison to meet Alauddin and gives him a slave, Malik Kafur. Malik Kafur kills Jalaluddin's ministers for Alauddin, and one of Alauddin's generals kills Jalaluddin. After that, Alauddin went back to Delhi and announced that he was the new Sultan. Kafur rises to become a general in Alauddin's army and in course of time becomes very close to Alauddin.
Padmavati travels to Mewar with Ratan Singh and receives blessings from its royal priest, Raghav Chetan. Chetan is eventually expelled after sneaking into the palace and spying on Ratan and Padmavati's intimate moment. After that, he goes to Delhi and tells Alauddin how beautiful Padmavati is. Alauddin invites the Rajputs to Delhi, but they decline his invitation as he is obsessed with possessing extravagant things. He got angry and surrounded Ratan Singh's capital Chittor. Alauddin is allowed to enter Chittor, where he meets Ratan Singh after feigning peace in celebration of Holi after a failed six-month siege. He asks about Padmavati; Ratan Singh acceded to this request summarily, preventing Alauddin from seeing his face. Khilji betrays Ratan Singh and takes him to Delhi as a prisoner.
At Queen Nagmati's urging, Padmavati agrees to see Alauddin under the following conditions: she will first meet Ratan, and Chetan will be executed for his earlier betrayal. There will be no male guardian during their visit. Alauddin agreed; After that Padmavati goes to Delhi to meet him. Meanwhile, Alauddin is injured but survives in a plot to assassinate his nephew. Alauddin awakens and kills his nephew while he is still recovering in bed to congratulate him on his victory. The Rajputs planned to attack the Khilji soldiers disguised as women during the morning prayers. Padmavati freed Ratan Singh with the help of Mehrunnisa and Chittor generals Gora and Badal. Alauddin urges Ratan to take the opportunity to kill him in his weakened state when Ratan confronts him. Ratan, on the other hand, refuses as it goes against the Rajput creed of not attacking the wounded. The Rajput ambush proceeds as planned, but the Khilji soldiers learn of it and repel it, killing the Rajputs and allowing the king and queen to escape.
