When the First Order fleet arrives shortly after the Battle of Starkiller Base, General Leia Organa is leading the Resistance forces in evacuating their base. Poe Dameron leads a costly counterattack that destroys the First Order dreadnought, defying Leia's orders. The remaining Resistance members make their way into hyperspace, but the First Order uses a device to locate them and launch another attack. When Kylo Ren learns that his mother Leia is aboard the main Resistance ship, he hesitates to open fire, but his wingmen destroy the bridge and kill most of the Resistance leaders. Despite being dragged into space, Leia uses the Force to survive. Vice-Admiral Holdo takes command of the Resistance while Leia recovers. The rest of the fleet is being pursued by the First Order as they run out of fuel.
Rey tries to get Luke Skywalker to join the Resistance on Ah-To. Luke declares that the Jedi must end and refuses to aid in the self-imposed exile. He agrees to teach Rey three lessons in the ways of the Force after being encouraged by R2-D2. Both Kylo and Rey are astonished when they begin using the Force to communicate with each other. Luke was afraid of his power, Kylo told Rey. Luke admits that he quickly investigated killing Kylo after discovering that Snoke was ruining him, prompting Kylo to overrule Luke's New Jedi request. Ray assures Ah-to that Kilo can be saved. Luke hesitates as he prepares to burn down the Jedi Library. The spirit of Luke's mentor Yoda appears and uses a bolt of lightning to destroy the library. He urges Luke to profit from his despair.
Poe, BB-8, Finn and Rose, on the other hand, hire a mechanic for a covert mission to disable a tracking device used by the First Order. They meet Hacker DJ when Maz Kanata directs them to the casino town of Canto Bight. After being chased by local security they escape Canto Bight with the help of stable children and racing animals. DJ, Finn and Rose break into Snoke's ship but are taken away by Captain Phasma. Additionally, Rey enters the ship and is captured by Kylo, who presents her to Snoke. Snoke reveals that he manipulated his mind in order to locate Luke.
Holdo intends to use the smaller transport ships to evacuate the remaining Resistance members. Po leads a mutiny, believing that his plan is cowardly and futile. Poe is stunned by a blaster from a recovered Leia, and the evacuation continues. While the other members of the fleet escape to an abandoned base on Crait, Holdo remains aboard the ship in order to betray Snoke's fleet. After DJ tells General Hux about the Resistance's plan, the First Order fleet opens fire on the evacuation transports, destroying many of them.
Despite being told to kill Rey, Kylo kills Snoke and with her aid defeats his Praetorian guards. Rey believes that Kylo has abandoned the dark side, but she asks him to lead the galaxy instead. She battles Luke for control of his lightsaber and refuses to share the weapon. Holdo makes the ultimate sacrifice by blasting Snoke's flagship at lightspeed and creating a debris field that renders the First Order fleet helpless. While Kylo declares himself Supreme Leader, Rey escapes destruction. Finn and Rose are freed by BB-8; After defeating Phasma, they join the remaining survivors on Crete. Poe, Finn, and Rose use out-of-date speeders to attack the First Order when they arrive. In the Millennium Falcon, Chewbacca and Rey distract the TIE fighters, and Rose prevents Finn from sacrificing himself. Using a siege cannon, the First Order breaks through the Resistance fortress.
Luke shows up and confronts the First Order, driving the Resistance away. Luke is unharmed when First Order forces fire on him, as per Kylo's orders. After that, he fights Luke with a lightsaber; After striking Luke, Kylo learns that Luke is projecting his image through the Force rather than being physically present. On the Falcon, Ray helps the remaining Resistance members escape. Luke passes away peacefully on Ah-To, exhausted, having merged with the Force. Leia informs Rey that the Resistance may revive when they both sense her passing.
