Vikram Sabharwal and Amrita Sandhu are happily married. Amrita, a beautiful housewife, is shown spending her days taking care of Vikram and the household. To celebrate Vikram's promotion, which will take him to London, they throw a party at home. Vikram learns at the party that his contract for promotion has been compromised in favor of his junior, an inexperienced worker who is a relative of his boss. He gets into an argument with his superior, Rajhans, and accuses him of serving his time twice. When Amrita tries to end the argument, Vikram slaps her in front of everyone. She is shaken by the incident; She herself accepts that Vikram slaps her which a husband who respects her would not do and starts to realize all the little inappropriate things that she had ignored earlier. Furthermore, Vikram refuses to accept responsibility for his actions, claiming that she got in his way because he was upset and that it is normal for such things to happen from time to time.
Amrita moves to her parents' house against everyone's advice, which results in an argument between her and Vikram. To force her to return home, he sends a legal document. When she refuses, his well-known lawyer Netra Jaising informs him that she has three options: reconcile, file for legal separation, or seek divorce. She files for divorce, which shocks her family. Amrita does not allege domestic violence or make any claim for alimony; She simply says that Vikram has no right to hit her, not even once. She reveals that all she wants is love and respect, and Thappad makes her realize that she is not getting that either.
