StoryLines
On Halloween, Ware Mitchell Jr., the chairman of Gotham City, is killed by the Riddler, a hideous old executioner. The murder is investigated by the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) and reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne, who has been Batman for two years. Lieutenant James Gordon receives a message that the Riddler has left for Batman. The Riddler kills Commissioner Pete Savage the next night and leaves another message for Batman.
Batman and Gordon learn that the Riddler left a thumb drive in Mitchell's vehicle containing photographs of Mitchell with a woman, Anika Kosolov, at the Ice Shelf Parlor - a club run by Oswald "The Penguin" Cobblepot, a lieutenant of kingpin Carmine Falcone. was done by Batman notices that Anika's roommate Selina Kyle is a waitress at the club, while Penguin feigns ignorance. When Annika goes missing, Batman sends Selina to the Icy Mass Parlor for answers and learns that Savage was on Falcone's finances, as is lead prosecutor Gil Coulson.
The Riddler kidnaps Coulson, straps a planned collar bomb to his neck, and sends him to infiltrate Mitchell's memorial service. When Batman arrives, the Riddler calls him via Coulson's telephone and moves to detonate the bomb if Coulson cannot answer three riddles. Colson is killed when he refuses to answer a third question, asking for the identity of the informant who provided the GCPD with the information that resulted in the historic drug bust and the end of gangster Salvatore Maroni. . Batman and Gordon learn that the source may be the Penguin and track him down for a drug deal. He learns that several unscrupulous GCPD officers were involved in transferring Maroni's operation to Falcone.
