Cobb and Arthur are "Extractors" who conduct corporate reconnaissance using exploratory dream-sharing innovation to invade the psyche of their targets and concentrate the data. His latest target, Saito, is amazed by Cobb's ability to fit a myriad of fantasies within each other. He offers to recruit Cobb for the apparently unimaginable business of planting an idea in a person's psyche; "Starting" with plans to disintegrate his father's organization on Robert, the son of Saito's rival Maurice Fischer.
Saito vows to clear Cobb of his criminal status, allowing him to return to his youth. Cobb accepts the deal and assembles his group: a con artist named Eames, a scientific expert named Joseph, and a student named Ariadne. Ariadne is tasked with planning the engineering of the fantasy, which Cobb himself cannot complete for fear of being weakened by a psychotic projection of her late husband Mal. Maurice dies, and the group freezes Robert on a plane to America in a three-level shared dream. The time on each layer moves more slowly than the layer above, with each of the three levels holding back a part to play music-synchronized "kicks" while the teleporter moves.
The group captures Robert in a city on the main level, though they fall for the subliminal projections he has made. After Saito is injured, Cobb learns that while licking the dust in the imagination will regularly excite the visionaries, Joseph's tranquilizers will send them into "Limbo": a universe of unlimited psyche. Ames impersonates Robert's backup parent, Peter Cooking, to present the possibility of an alternate will to disband the organization. Cobb reveals to Ariadne that he and Mal entered Limbo while finding separate paths in relation to sharing dreams, with the real world experiencing fifty years in a single night due to time travel.
